Before the Little Rock Nine walked through the doors of Central High School, attorneys walked into courtrooms to establish their right to be there.
Next year, the nation will mark the 70th anniversary of the Little Rock Nine's historic integration of Central High School. As that milestone approaches, the Daisy Bates Foundation is honored to share the story of Daisy Bates—the woman whose leadership helped nine students change America.
The Daisy Bates Foundation invites you to become a Founding Stop Sponsor of DAISY BATES: IN HER OWN WORDS Little Rock Civil Rights History Tour, a storytelling and civil rights history tour app. Launching November 11, 2026, on Daisy Bates' birthday, the app will connect visitors with historic places, people, and events throughout Little Rock that shaped this defining chapter of American history.
Through audio, historical accounts, and location-based navigation, users can explore these stories virtually from anywhere or visit the places where they unfolded.
The Legal Foundation of the Story
The legal foundation for the Daisy Bates and Central High story was Brown v. Board of Education. The struggle to enforce that decision continued through Cooper v. Aaron. And Daisy Bates' own fight reached the United States Supreme Court in Bates v. City of Little Rock, which protected freedom of association against compelled disclosure of NAACP membership information.
